Kier building bridges with the next generation of civil engineers

As a founding partner of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) new learning hub and bridge engineering exhibition in London, Kier is supporting the launch by working with local schools to learn about the industry.

With the spend on infrastructure in the UK expected to exceed £400bn, it's essential more young people are attracted into the industry.

At Kier, we've taken a leading role in developing young people and talent coming in to the industry and we’re excited to be working with schools across the country to give pupils a taste of civil engineering.

We've donated a number of LEGO kits to schools across the country and set the pupils a challenge to build the most impressive bridge structure in under an hour. In small groups, students were tasked with using the LEGO kits to build a structure that could be as tall, wide or long as they liked as long as it resembled a bridge.

Pupils were each given a LEGO key ring to keep as a souvenir from the day and the schools will be using the kits for other activities as part of their curriculum.

Before the session, we gave a short presentation about the industry showcasing just how significant a role civil engineers have played in shaping our landscape for generations to come.
